Music forms an integral part of our liturgical celebrations. It leads the faithful to sing and give greater glory to God. As Johann Sebastian Bach once said, “The aim and final reason of all music is nothing other than the glorification of God and the refreshment of the spirit.”1 In this case, music engages the congregation in ‘full and active participation’ in the mass. It also provides support and encouragement for all members of the worshipping community as they take part in the celebration of the Eucharist.
As a diverse community our musical hymns and songs reflect the rich heritage of our Catholicism embracing different cultures and languages. The Fathers of the Church expressed it through the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy (Sacrosanctum Concilium) that liturgy makes the assembly actively involved by praying and singing praises to God.
